This year, for the first time, a series of events will also be held at the Oerlikon campus as part of the Future Day. In addition to visiting the parent at the workplace, the children have the opportunity to participate in free offers such as workshops or tours.

Lea Mörsdorf and Mirella Manfredi are organizing the workshop How and what the brain tells us on Thursday, November 10, 2022, 14:00 - 15:00, UZH, Psychological Institute, Binzmühlestrasse 14, 8050 Zurich, room BIN-1-A.12.

Our brain is a fascinating structure. It enables us to perceive, interpret and interact with our environment. At the same time, our brain works in secret and we do not always realize what the brain does with the information that we perceive via our sensory organs, eye, ear, skin.

It is estimated that the human brain consists of about 100 billion nerve cells. Due to the immense number of possible connections, we are able to store huge masses of information. One may wonder if and how we can find out how the brain works and how we can measure the activity of the brain. One technique that is available to us for this purpose is electroencephalography, or EEG for short. With this technique, the tiny pulses of electricity that nerve cells emit when they are active are measured on the surface of the head using many small sensors. We will get to know this technique during the course and show which signals our brain emits in different situations and what they mean.

Children who wish to volunteer for a demonstration of EEG will have electrolyte gel put in their hair, which can be washed out afterwards.
