New Publication from the Risk and Resilience Research Group: Patterns of Alcohol and Cannabis Consumption among Adolescents

PhD student Michelle Loher and her colleagues have published a new paper examining patterns of alcohol and cannabis use among adolescents (n = 11,003), using data from the U.S. nationally representative Monitoring the Future study. The paper was developed during Michelle’s research stay at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, under the supervision of Prof. Megan Patrick.

The study found that one in nine 18-year-olds reported using both alcohol and cannabis in the past month, and nearly 4% engaged in frequent concurrent use. It also identified key factors linked to these patterns, highlighting frequent concurrent users as an at-risk group. For example, adolescents in this group were more likely to spend evenings out, have lower grades, smoke cigarettes, and live with a single parent.
